An electrophoretic examination of cobra venoms.

چکیده
The complex chemical nature of Indian cobra (Naja naja) venom was indicated by Ganguly & Malkana (1936) and Ganguly (1937), who reported its percentage composition as follows: total protein 87-56, globulin 20*31, albumin 39-69, primary proteose 11 31, secondary proteose 16-81. In addition to proteins, the venom was found to contain cholesterol, phospholipins, inorganic substances and colouring matter. The toxic principle was found to be associated with the secondary proteose. Ganguly (1936) also reported the presence of proteolytic, lecithin-splitting and rennin-like enzymes in the venom. The work recorded in this article is the result of an investigation of several cobra venoms by the method of electrophoresis.

Identification of enzymes and toxins in venoms of Indian cobra and Russell's viper after starch gel electrophoresis.
Snake venoms are known to contain a number of enzymes (l-3). Attempts have been made to correlate the toxicity of snake venoms with their enzymic activity, e.g. between nucleases and toxicity (4), phospholipase A and neurotoxic action of cobra venom (5), and proteolytic and coagulant activity and toxicity (6-8). Most of these studies have been carried out on whole venoms or after elimination of...
متن کاملComparison of Sea Snake (Hydrophiidae) Neurotoxin to Cobra (Naja) Neurotoxin
Both sea snakes and cobras have venoms containing postsynaptic neurotoxins. Comparison of the primary structures indicates many similarities, especially the positions of the four disulfide bonds. However, detailed examination reveals differences in several amino acid residues. Amino acid sequences of sea snake neurotoxins were determined, and then compared to cobra neurotoxins by computer model...
متن کاملCHARACTERIZATION OF AN ANTICOAGULANT AGENT IN THE VENOM OF IRANIAN COBRA (NAJA NAJA OXIANA).
Snake venoms contain a rich variety of factors which affect blood coagulation. There have been few reports on the anticoagulant activity of the venom of different cobras, but no such observations have been made on the Iranian cobra, although a procoagulant factor has been described. In this study an anticoagulant factor has been purified from the venom of Naja naja oxiana using gel filtrat...

of factor B from mixtures of normal human serum (NHS) and plasma from a patient with membranoproliferative nephritis (MPP), either by heating or by immune equivalence absorption, blocks C3 breakdown by C3NeF. Addition of purified factor B to these mixtures restores the anticomplementary effect. When purified factor B is added to mixtures of MPP and purified C3, breakdown also occurs. Associated...
متن کاملThe Sterility of Snake Venom Solutions
The haemostatic effect of viperine venom and the analgesic effect produced by cobra venom have made venom therapy a popular form of treatment, particularly in chronic painful conditions. In addition to these specific indications snake venoms are in considerable vogue in some centres and are administered in an increasing number of clinical conditions. The venom preparations are used differently,...
